Beschreibung
Santiago de Cuba is the second-largest city in Cuba and the capital of the Santiago de Cuba Province. The city has approximately 500,000 inhabitants. Until 1556, Santiago was the capital of Cuba and a stronghold of the Spanish Armada in the Caribbean. "Don" Facundo Bacardí Massó founded the internationally renowned and successful company, Bacardí Distillery, in 1862. On July 26, 1953, the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro began with the attack on the Moncada Barracks. On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro proclaimed the victory of the Cuban Revolution in Santiago de Cuba. On January 1, 1984, President Fidel Castro awarded the city of Santiago the honorary title of "Hero City of the Republic of Cuba." The official motto of the city, which is part of the city's coat of arms, is "Yesterday rebellious, today hospitable, always heroic." The Shrine of El Cobre, with its richly adorned statue of the Virgin Mary, is located between Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba. The Merciful Virgin of Cobre (Spanish: Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre) is a wooden statue revered since 1612 and is the most important pilgrimage site in Cuba. On March 27, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI paid tribute to the Virgin of El Cobre during his pilgrimage to Cuba on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of her discovery, presenting her with a Golden Rose. Santiago is influenced by both Spanish and French cultures, most visibly seen in the Tivolí neighborhood, which emerged during the wave of French settlers and their slaves.
